Search Engine Optimization - Top Tips

  • To increase your page rank, become more active on other websites. Submit your views to related forums and article sites including your URL at the bottom of each entry. Allow people to share and distribute your words to spead your brand and url!
  • Add you main keywords to the name of your files, folders and even domain. Seperate each word with a '-'. Example: www.gardening/plants/flower-seeds.html. Make sure your url is not to long.
  • Don't forget to add your keywords (in a descriptive manner) to both your 'alt' (within images) and 'title' (within url links) tags. The trick is, as with all search engine optimisation techniques, to aim to please both the search engine and your visitors.
  • Your website's home page is the most important page on your site. Don't use it for a 'splash screen'. Provide amble amounts of textually information about the site - a summary of contents, pack with all of the important keywords relating to your subject.
  • Google can now index the contents of Flash files, but still has massive difficulty making much sense textual content. It is far better to stick to standard html and css for the wow-factor (and the search engines of course).
  • Selecting 2-3 keywords is essential for each page. Don't worry too much about the keywords meta tag. Not many search engines use it today. I still use mine to help keep track of the words that I have optimised the page for.
  • Put your keywords in to header h1, h2, h3, etc to improve your page rank. Only use h1 once for your main heading. Other headers can be used multiple times. Don't write whole sentences with them - headings only!
  • Treat each and every page on your website as a seperate search engine optimization campaign. Use 3-4 different keywords for each, and at the same time try to keep within the general genre of the domain. If your site is about cakes - talk about cakes!
  • Don't forget to add an 'alt' message to images within your page. Try to naturally include your keywords in to it - 'This is an image of...'.
  • Many SEO people in the past have claimed that if you misspell a word, it will have a positive effect on the search engines. This can be so, but it the long run, who are you trying to impress?
  • If you want people to link to your website and for the top search engines to take an interest in your content, then write with an enthusiastic commitment to your subject matter. Your language will be naturally rich in great keywords.
  • A good way of getting a high page rank with the top search engines is to try and get as many websites to link to your site. One way links are extremely powerful.
  • Don't rely on 'Auto-submit' applications to get your site seen. It is far better (but time consuming), to create a list of directories and then manually apply for inclusion. Keep a record of which directories you submitted to, to avoid repeat submissions.
  • In UK English, 'Optimization' is spelt 'Optimisation'. If you are writing on the subject, use the 'z' instead of the 's'. Google is reluctant to accept the English spelling.
